Enkelé, voices and drums, is a women’s group that conveys the strength and energy of femininity through the traditional rhythms of Colombia’s Caribbean coast and the Magdalena River, such as bullerengue, cumbia, tambora, son de negro, and mapalé. Their project combines music and pedagogy, promoting Afro-Colombian culture and violence-free spaces through workshops and concerts.
Colombian Caribbean Folklore
Enkelé has performed in countries such as Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, the United States, Cuba, and Canada, as well as in over 10 departments of Colombia. Their accolades include IMCT Grants (2022 and 2023), the Golden Congo award at the 2023 Barranquilla Carnival, the She Is Cultural Group of the Year (2022), the Idartes Award at the 2022 Festival Ríos de Música, and the Women’s Rights After War Project Grant (2022).
With strong fieldwork and the support of allies like the Lüvo Foundation, Enkelé fosters social reconstruction in communities through a feminist and anti-racist lens. Their repertoire narrates stories of violence and resilience, aiming to heal and drive social change through art.
